| Openhead
Steel Pails are available in sizes ranging from 3 to
6-1/2 gallon (see below for stock sizes). Most of the
pails we stock are UN rated for packaging of hazardous
materials such as solvents, chemicals, and coatings. We
also can provide lighter guage and non-rated pails for
non-hazardous materials. Pails are available with various fittings in the covers and with various exterior colors and interior linings. |

UN Ratings
The ratings listed in the above table are for packing group II liquids. These pails also carry a rating for packing group III liquids, as well as packing groups II and III solids. For a cross-reference, please contact Fox Valley Containers, Inc.
The above UN rated steel pails are suitable for ground shipments as well as by sea. Pails with a kPa rating of 100 can be shipped by air. For carriers that require overpacks when shipping by air or ground, please refer to our section on overpacks for steel pails.
Standard Guages
Different thickness guages are used to acheive the various UN ratings on the pails. Contact Fox Valley Containers, Inc. for more information.
Colors and Lithography
Black and Grey are the standard exterior colors for steel pails. Other colors, such as white, blue, etc., or pails with a lithographed design are available. Minimums and upcharges will apply.
Linings
Steel pails are available with interior linings to protect the pails from corrosion or reaction with the materials being packaged. The three standard linings are as follows:

As a rule of thumb, the Rust Inhibitor lining is used for most oil-based or mild solvent mixtures that will not react with the metal pail. The D-8 lining is used with strong solvent mixtures that will either react with the metal or contain small amounts of water or corrosive materials. L-15 is used for products such as some paints or printing inks that may contain a certain amount of water along with the solvents or resins. The optional L-35 lining is for water-based products such as latex paint.
Fittings
Various fittings such as Rieke Flexspouts, or Screw Caps and Innerseals are available in addition to the plain cover. Other options such as self-venting spouts, and spouts that allow for the expansion and contraction of gases to pass through are also available. Other Standard Openhead Pails
(non-UN)
The following pails are not rated for hazardous materials. They are used primarily for non-regulated or exempt products, such as some paints, printing inks, and driveway sealers. We carry 3, 3.5, and 5 gallon sizes in 29 ga., black exterior, rust inhibitor lining, and plain cover. The other options are available upon request.

are UN rated for packaging of hazardous materials such as
solvents and other chemicals. Pails are available with various fittings in the head and with various exterior colors and interior linings. |
